1. LANXESS’S COMPOSITES & HIGH-TECH PLASTIC GRADE FOR HONDA
Lightweight solution from German Specialty Chemicals Company LANXESS has been featured in FCV (fuel cell vehicle) Clarity Fuel Cell, the latest model of hydrogen electric vehicle from Honda Motor Co., which recently has been introduced in the market. Using Tepex, continuous- and long-fiber reinforced thermoplastic composites with PA 6 matrix from LANXESS subsidiary Bond-Laminates, in combination with Durethan, a PA 6 high-tech plastic grade from LANXESS, Honda has introduced the world-first development of hybrid-molded rear bumper beam in the model using one-shot molding technology enabled by LANXESS. The result is approximately 50 percent weight reduction compared to the metal solution and a significant streamlining of the production process.

2.BRASS NOZZLE HEATERS FROM PCT
The new IMPERIUM line of heaters is available as direct replacements for all standard OEM nozzle heaters from PCT. They are constructed of solid brass. The heater cable is mechanically deformed into the heater grooves and along with the use of a tight-fitting stainless steel oversleeve, the design guarantees the elimination of ‘hot spots’. The design offers not only dramatically longer heater life but increased temperature uniformity across the face of the mold. Thermocouples can be integrated into the heater or mounted externally. 4. MUCELL SUPER CRITICAL FLUID DOSING & DELIVERY SYSTEM
Trexel Inc., the developer of MuCell microcellular injection molding technology, announced the global introduction of the company’s newly developed T-400 series SCF (Super Critical Fluid) delivery system. The system is specifically designed for large molding applications between 2,500 and 12,500 grams. It is capable of delivering 50 grams of nitrogen in a 45-second cycle (0.5% by weight for a 10-kg part weight) and is designed for molding machines with a screw size greater than 90 mm. The system is designed to convert industrial grade nitrogen into a super critical fluid, and precisely doses and injects the super critical fluid into the plasticizing unit of the injection molding machine at a pressure up to 240 bar, creating a lower density microcellular material structure in the molded plastic part.

5. EXCEED XP POLYETHYLENES FROM EXXONMOBIL
ExxonMobil has launched its Exceed XP performance polymers which are designed to provide extreme performance in a variety of film applications and to run at faster production rates. These unique polymers are especially well-suited for demanding applications such as liquid and food packaging, construction liners and agricultural films, where extreme performance matters. It allows converters to develop innovative solutions for the fabrication of Liquid packaging including bag-in-box, pillow and stand-up pouches, and flexi-tank container liners, producing exceptionally strong films, with excellent flex crack resistance, flexible food packaging for use in highly demanding environments such as low temperatures or high volume.

6. DSM’S NEW BIO-BASED FORTII ECO GRADES
Royal DSM has extended its current biobased platform with the introduction of a new family of high performance polyamide 4T materials, called ForTii Eco. Partially produced from renewable resource, the new range of high temperature resistant, bio-based polymers fits with the growing need for faster, thinner and more sustainable devices - specifically in the electronics industry, such as the smartphone – a product that becomes around 12% thinner every year, even while speed and functionality continue to increase. DSM introduced it at Chinaplas, Shanghai, April 25-28 and this material is able to meet more stringent requirements on properties like flow, mechanical and dielectrical strength than previously possible, already exhibiting performance outperforming other polyamides.

7.DECADENT DELICI DESSERT PACKAGING FOR COSTCO
Dessert sold as singles in Europe was adapted to U.S. club store sale in multipacks. Premium desserts sold at Costco in heavyweight glass cups trayed and sleeved in 6-packs are presented in a decadently tasteful packaging design. The product is Delici, an imported Belgian dessert, with packaging designed by More Branding expressly for the product’s distribution by Costco in the U.S. and Canada. They are reusable & gives the package an unsuspected weightiness. Other components include a plastic lid seals each cup;6-pack thermoformed plastic tray and a glossy, perfect tolerance/tension-tight product sleeve with heavy varnish. One of the challenges was creating a sleeve with a heavy enough varnish to withstand frozen/chilled condensation. No glue or plastic shrink film is used in the packaging.

8.CHILD RESISTANCE IN NEW BLISTER PACKAGING
A uniquely functional pharmaceutical packaging concept, developed collaboratively by Bemis Healthcare Packaging and Presto Products Co., uses flexible packaging instead of paperboard cartons to protect blister packs. The centerpiece of the packaging design is a pouch that provides both child-resistance (CR) and barrier protection for prescription and OTC drugs. The design also offers merchandising flexibility for retailers and pharmacies. The pouch features Presto’s Child-Guard CR track and slider, a closure designed to be difficult for kids to open but easy and intuitive for seniors, a multi-layer lamination of 92-gauge PET/35-ga foil/PE (PerfecPharm P510) offering high moisture and oxygen barrier. The pouches are custom sized to meet the needs of the application, either surface or reverse flexo print.

9.STANYL HGR1 FROM DSM FOR AUTOMOBILE APPLICATIONS
Royal DSM has launched an innovative new high performance material based on Stanyl® polyamide 46 which reduces frictional torque in automobile engine timing systems and will provide OEMs with a very cost-effective tool for reducing fuel consumption. By substituting PA66 with Stanyl HGR1 in the timing systems chain contact surfaces, frictional torque can be cut by 0.65 Nm,equating to a fuel efficiency improvement of over a mile per gallon (over 0.4 km/L) over the drive cycle. In comparison to PA66, Stanyl HGR1 delivered 10% lower frictional torque within the critical engine speed range between 650 and 1800 rpm.

10. BIO-BASED MATERIAL OF THE YEAR AWARD FOR ORINEO’S MATERIAL

12. PANASONIC’S LIGHT DIFFUSION PP MOLDING COMPOUNDS FOR LEDS
Panasonic Corporation announced that it has developed a light diffusion type polypropylene (PP) resin molding compounds, called "FULL BRIGHT"*1 PP, which can extend the operating life of LEDs. In addition to injection molding, this material can also be used for injection stretch blow molding process that was previously believed to be difficult using conventional light diffusion PP resin molding compounds. 0.5-mm thick thin molding, which was previously unachievable can be produced.Having a specific gravity of 0.93, compared with polycarbonate 1.2, this material reduces product weight by 30% when produced in the same volume. Applications include LED lighting fixtures that require highly refined styling and complex processing (automotive interior lighting, etc.), digital signage, etc.

13. FPA PRODUCT INNOVATION AWARD FOR EASYSNACKING PACK
RPC Superfos’s (Taastrup, Denmark) sleek and innovative EasySnacking packaging solution for eating on-the-go has received the FPA Product Innovation Award 2016 from the Foodservice Packaging Association. 14. BIOCOMPATIBLE RESIN FOR DESKTOP 3D PRINTERS
Formlabs,has announced introduction of Dental SG resin, which it claims is the first biocompatible resin for desktop 3D printing. This Class 1 material designed primarily for surgical guide applications, will allow new applications in the desktop 3D-printing space such as the fabrication of high-precision drill guides based on digital scan data for implant surgeries. Dental professionals will be able to directly print a surgical guide from a 3D model at an affordable price.Dentists currently use the Form 2 3D printer, to create surgical guides, educational models, bleaching trays, retainers, aligners and related products.

15. DISINFECTANT-RESISTANT THERMOPLASTICS FROM RTP
The RTP Company was recognized for its RTP 2000 HC series thermoplastic compounds (winning the 2016 BIOMEDevice Boston Innovation prize) that maintain strength, functionality and integrity, even when repeatedly exposed to harsh disinfectants used in healthcare environments. The 2000 HC materials outperformed industry-standard PC/ABS materials in a series of tensile strength and elongation tests conducted by the company. this new material has the same shrink rate as PC/ABS, allowing processors to continue using the same molds.The material is suited for making housings for medical electronic devices and wheeled hospital equipment.

16. POLYONE’S ULTRATUF LED SHEET MADE OF EASTMAN’S COPOLYESTER
PolyOne has launchedUltraTuf™ LED, a premium light diffusing sheet that is made using BPA-free Eastman Spectar™ Stratus copolyester, which has received UL GREENGUARD Certification for Indoor Air Quality. The sheet has ability to transmit up to 91% of light while still effectively diffusing the light across the lens and can be used to create visually stunning designs that allow OEMs to differentiate their lighting systems. It also has superior durability, withstanding direct impact in shipping or use of up to 15 times that of most traditional light diffuser materials for simpler handling and longer installed life. Good chemical resistance also makes it suitable for demanding environments.

18. CHEMOURS TEFLON™ FLUOROPLASTICS FOR MEASURING DEVICES
HEW-KABEL, Wipperfürth/Germany uses Teflon™ fluoroplastics from Chemours for triaxial cables used in high-precision measuring devices. Due to their structure and the combination of two Teflon™ fluoroplastic types from Chemours, these cables have very good electrical properties such as extremely low noise voltage. They thus contribute to the high measuring accuracy of up to 0.2 nm – a figure that corresponds approximately to the diameter of a cesium atom. 20. DOW REDUCING CARBON FOOTPRINT OF RIO 2016 OLYMPICS
As the Official Chemistry Company of the Olympic Games and the Official Carbon Partner of Rio 2016, The Dow Chemical Co. (Midland, MI) has introduced a new Microfoaming technology for the packaging industry in Latin America. The project is part of a comprehensive Dow program aimed at minimizing the carbon footprint of the Rio 2016 Olympic Games. This technology offers density reduction (light weighting) in coextruded films through physical foaming. 21.WONDER MINERAL’S FUNCTIONALITIES AS A PLASTIC ADDITIVE
Mined in the state of Utah, halloysite possesses a structure that resembles hollow carbon nanotubes. Supplier Applied Minerals (NY) has been marketing the material as a plastic additive capable of various functionalities under its Dragonite brand since 2009. It possesses a carbon nanotube-like structure, with typical dimensions of 0.2-2.0 μm in length, a 15-30-nm inside diameter, and a 50-70-nm outside diameter. The hollow tubular mineral acts as a nucleating agent not only for PP but also for HDPE and has been demonstrated to reduce cycle times in injection-molded parts by 25% for HDPE using a 1% dosage for an overall cost saving per part of 11%. The Dragonite-HP grade can also be used in rotomolding applications where a 1% dosage allows a 15% reduction in cycle time and a 16% weight reduction by thinwalling.
